Whatever you do, don’t drop the salt!

Last week I mentioned SALT as being a potential vision-theme for us as a church. Here’s a few more thoughts…

The other day I was listening to a Podcast (I can’t remember which) and they were talking about a show on the History Channel called “Big History.” They said the show was made to go through the past 13.7 billion years highlighting the major pivot points of history. Guess what episode 1 was called – “The Super Power of Salt”!

On IMDB the episode summary says this (I haven’t seen the show or episode): “We all know that mankind can’t live without air, food and water…the same is true of salt. The salt on your table is a key to unlocking the story of our planet and the cosmos. Big History reveals how this simple molecule underpins our civilization, launched wars, built monuments like the Great Wall of China, sparked revolutions from India to France…and it’s even the substance that makes up our thoughts.”

I must admit that I didn’t know this! But, knowing it makes me realise that Jesus was using a very powerful metaphor when he said, “You are the salt of the earth” (Matthew 5:13). Salt does stuff! As I said in last week’s letter – it preserves, it flavours, and it cures. And as salt is to civilization, so too are Christians. “Church” is the salt-shaker, we are the grains of salt, and we gather together on (most) Sundays to stay salty… then we disperse in the week to “saltify” our various contexts of home and school/work.

Now you’re probably thinking – “You said all this last week, why are you harping on it?” Because I’m serious about it. I think we need an identifying vision-theme as we move ahead, and I reckon this one takes the cake (or should I say, fries?) So, keep thinking about it and praying over it, and please come chat to me about it! And, if you have a better idea – share it!

Stay salty, Margs Baps!
